I hate being without a book to read. I hate it so much that when I’m commuting to work I usually have two or three stashed in my bag ‘just in case’.
So when the Christmas break approaches – however short it may be – I usually have a ready pile of reading matter stacked neatly next to my bed or stowed in my travelling case.
This Summer in no particular order I’ll be reading:
The Hanging Tree by Ben Aaaronovitch (Finally! Been waiting for ages…)
Dark Matter by Michelle Paver
Jane Steele by Lyndsay Faye
The Good People by Hannah Kent
A Most Magical Girl by Karen Foxlee (The hardcover edition is seriously pretty!)
A Very British Murder by Lucy Worsley
Fashion On The Ration by Julie Summers (You can read my thoughts on Jambusters here.)
So you can see, a nice broad cross-section of fiction and non-fiction covering everything from ghost stories, crime, and war to fantasy, superstition and folklore.
What about you? If you have any good book recommendations I’d love to hear them.
Happy reading!
Rebecca, thanks for the reading list. I may be adding a few of those to mine. 🙂 I just started reading Scared to Death, a crime thriller by Rachel Amphlett (an indie author from Brisbane, QLD) and can’t put it down. I’ve also heard great things about suspense novel, The Woman in Cabin 10, by Ruth Ware, so I’ll be adding that to my summer reading list too!
You’re welcome Audrey! FYI I just purchased Belinda Pollard’s Poison Bay, she also heralds from Qld. I’ve seen Rachel’s books online and will be getting one of hers as well sometime soon, thanks for the reminder.
I just looked her up and Poison Bay looks like a great read, thanks!
[…] holiday reading pile […]
No worries Audrey, we can compare notes 🙂
I gave myself a book for Christmas that had been sitting on the must read pile for quite some time…fortuitously I went to Orange without the book I was reading, so I started the one “Santa” left for me and it’s fabulous…I think I should plan to raid the bookshelf and gift myself some more for my birthday, or maybe it could be a seasonal thing…with a screen adaptation of the handmaiden’s tale due, and audio readings of earthsea about, and i read something about the unbearable lightness of being recently (perhaps on brain pickings), I’m tempted to re-read these three 🙂
They all sound brilliant! It’s never a bad thing to gift yourself a book…I do it all the time to feed my soul or as the Egyptians said, feed my ka and contribute to the ongoing exchange of universal energies. Deep, huh?
